I ended up needing debt relief assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic that destroyed my new business start-up. I received a debt relief/consolidation advertisement from Slate Legal Group. After hearing an amazing sales pitch full of misleading information lacking full disclosure of how the program actually worked and how Slate Legal Group has great relationships with these creditors I joined the program enrolling 9 accounts. Since entering the program, one account went into litigation and still showed as an active litigation on my account as of 18 September 2024. I learned four days ago, the matter was settled in court with a summary judgment against me in April 2024. According to the court records, no one from Slate Legal showed up to court to represent me, I was not required to attend the court proceedings as I was assured by Slate Legal Group they would be present to provide my representation. One account shows an active payment plan in place with a remaining balance of $330. After researching a little more, the last payment made to the creditor was in November 2023, and I learned Slate Legal Group originally reported this debt was settled, until I brought it to their attention that the account wasn’t settled. I checked my account with Global Holdings and found there was sufficient funds in the account to pay the remaining balance. I was told that because the payment had lapsed due to insufficient funds in my account in November 2023, they would have to renegotiate a new settlement. I received no notification that the payment was not made, the account was delinquent, or a new negotiation was made. Three accounts were settled, however, each account was settled for an amount ranging from $300-$500 more than the original amount owed, the reasoning for the increased amount was the adjusted debt amount included late fees charged by the creditors. I terminated my contract with Slate Legal effective 18 September 2024, because of these mounting misrepresentations of the contract by Slate Legal Group and after learning of the Lawsuit against 40 of these type of companies, that have some affiliation by Slate Legal Group, by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and seven state attorneys general, where Slate Legal has enjoined the lawsuit as an external intervenor, because of their unlawful practice of the collection of fees before providing services model that Slate was using until the lawsuit. It is my understanding, that the court has placed a temporary restraining order on all parties in this lawsuit to stop all further negotiations for debt settlements on any account that has not already be negotiated, and are not allowed to collect fees until the resolution of this lawsuit. Slate Legal Group has not properly notified any of its clients of the on-going litigation it has enjoined. Per the contract agreement, Slate Legal Group was to provide its clients with settlement offers for the client’s approval. I have never received a settlement offer for my approval. Slate Legal approved them without my knowledge. I am waiting to join the class action lawsuit that will follow the CFPB lawsuit against these predatory debt relief companies. As of my termination date, I paid approximately $22,000 to Slate Legal Group who settled approximately $6268.72 of my enrolled debt. So, they collected approximately $15,000 in fees and did not provide the services IAW the contract! DO NOT USE THESE TYPES OF COMPANIES! All you are is a human ATM siphoning money from your bank account, until you wise up like I finally did and see the scheme for what it really is. Oddly enough, when I contacted Slate Legal Group to withdrawal from the program, I expected to be asked the reason for the withdrawal and any remedy to retain me as a customer. The reaction was completely the opposite. The agent politely said okay and went about the process of recording my termination of my contract. They seemed more then happy to see me terminate my contract with them.
